Japan combines tradition and modernity unlike anywhere else in the World. A trip to the Land of the Rising Sun is an unforgettable experience, a travel both back in time and forward into the future, cleverly balanced into a very unique Japanese present. Japan is an archipelago of over 3,000 islands the four largest being Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū and Shikoku accounting for 97% of the country’s land area. Most of Japan is mountainous and volcanic. Its most revered volcano and the epitome of Japan abroad is Mount Fuji (Fujisan) which stands, majestic, a few dozens of kilometers away from Tokyo. At the crossroad of three continental plates, the country is also subject to intense seismic activity with which the Japanese people have learnt to live. However the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated the North-Eastern coast of Japan on March 11th, 2011 were a brutal reminder of the natural forces at play in Japan against which mankind is helpless.
