When I heard "Scandinavia" as I was small, Norway always popped first in my head. I pictured Vikings' sagas, fjords, steep mountains, midnight sun, trolls and last but not least Christmas' "saumon fumé" (smoked salmon). Little has it changed since, though I have learned it is a bit more than just that. Norway is to me first and foremost a country with an exceptional, very well preserved nature, the stage of some of the World’s most beautiful destinations, like the Lofoten islands up North.

Norway together with Denmark and Sweden form Scandinavia and share close cultural and historic bonds, besides having a dialect continuum making for mutually intelligible languages - Swedish, Norwegian and Danish. Norway occupies the western part of the Scandinavian peninsula as well as Queen Maud Land in Antarctica.
