Saint Petersburg is located at the Eastern extremity of the Gulf of Finland, on the Neva river in Northwestern Russia. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, it is the result of a monarch’s ambition and will to build, on swamps, a capital that could not only rival those of Europe but also offer a key strategic position in Northern Europe. A marvel of neoclassical architecture it is from the Neva river that one can truly grasp the beauty and unique charm of the historical city centre, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Saint Petersburg also features a number of forgettable Soviet buildings and other countless gloomy housing condos however worth a quick detour.

You will find in this picture gallery, pictures of Saint Petersburg seen from the Neva River, pictures of Saint Isaac’s cathedral, of Smolny Convent, pictures of the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, pictures of Paul and Peter’s fortress, pictures of the State Hermitage Museum, of Peterhof (the Summer Palace) and of Yusupov palace.
