Velikiy Novgorod is one of Russia’s most historic cities. Founded in the 9th century, built on the Volkhov river, it still features today a great variety of medieval monuments, like the Saint Sophia Cathedral built in the 11th century (with the golden cupola in the gallery below). The Kremlin, within the walls of which lies Saint Sophia, also contains the oldest palace (15th century), the oldest clock tower (17th century) and the oldest bell tower (mid 15th century) in Russia as well as the monument to the Millenium of Russia unveiled in 1862 that displays  the country’s most prominent historic figures.
